The role of the marriage therapist is to help couples express their feelings for one another. In any troubled marriage there are going to be emotions that may be difficult to express. A therapist helps couples express all of their feelings--positive or negative--so that couples can begin to better understand their relationships.

Marriage therapists do not take sides. They strive to understand the feelings of both partners in a relationship so that they can help them communicate with one another more effectively. The marriage therapist listens carefully to what is said so that he or she can help unearth the root of a marriage's problems. He or she must also teach partners how to listen to one another so that they can begin to solve their problems on their own.

What they fail to realize is that under most circumstances it takes outside to help to find solutions to the serious emotional challenges couples face. A marriage therapist is often the only one that can help show a troubled couple the way towards piecing their marriage back together.

It Takes Two
Marriage therapy cannot work without the participation of both partners of a marriage. Relationships are about the union between two people; one person alone cannot save a marriage. Two, however, can rediscover those feelings and emotions that brought them together in the first place.
